Events and Festivals


Local village and small agricultural shows run most Saturdays from May until the end of September. Please ask and we’ll be able to tell you where the nearest one is taking place.
On a much larger scale, one of the biggest shows in the UK, The Royal Welsh Agricultural Show takes place over 4 days in July every year at Builth Wells. It’s a great day out and the 2010 show dates are from the 19th to the 22nd of July.

Llandrindod Wells celebrates it's roots as a Victorian Spa with an annual Victorian Festival. The main street is decorated and the town hosts a kaleidescope of victorian events. The 2010 festival will run from the 21st to the 29th of August.

Hay on Wye is famous worldwide for it's wonderful second hand bookshops, over 40 at the last count and also for the Hay Festival of Literature. The 2010 Festival takes place from the 27th of May to the 6th of June and includes a programme of children’s events.

Brecon's Jazz Festival is well established and a real gem amongst music festivals. Held over the second weekend in August each year (6th - 8th for 2010), the festival takes over venues throughout Brecon's lovely streets. www.breconjazz.co.uk

And for something completely different...
The World Bog Snorkelling Championship.
Yes bog snorkelling!
In 2006 over 100 competitors bog snorkelled their way along a muddy trench cut into a peat bog. Competitors wear a snorkel and fins and must not use any conventional swimming strokes.

The event is held at Llanwrtyd Wells (July 11th 2010) as is the annual World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Championship and a Bog Snorkelling Triathlon.

Willow Theatre
Three miles from the Lon is the unique Living Willow Theatre, a scaled down version of Shakespeare's Globe in London but constructed entirely of living willow. The season of performances starts in April and runs throughout the summer. More details at www.shakespearelink.co.uk
Eating Out
Rhayader has 10 popular pubs all within a round trip of 400 metres. They all serve good food and range from the traditional pub with real ales to the more modern of bars. Rhayader also has an award winning Fish and Chip shop, and both Rhayader and Llandrindod have several restaurants and takeaways.
