Farm Walks and Nature Trails

Beth Knight illustrations

Available for Guests at any time during their stay. Community Walkers and Groups are required to make a prior appointment due to farm safety reasons. On March 28th 2012, Lôn Lodges launched their two Farm Walks and Nature Trails. The wildlife walks will take you on a tour through the fields of a traditional Radnorshire farm, giving you the chance to explore the natural beauty of the landscape, wildlife, farm stock and heritage sites located along the routes. Visiting guests who stay at the Lodges will be able to follow a printed guide and map which explains the wildlife and natural habitat. Richard Knight, of Rhayader by Nature, provided a wealth of information on the birds, wild herbs and native trees and the leaflets have been beautifully designed and illustrated by Beth, of Beth Knight Illustrations. The Clwyd-Powys Archeological Trust has also provided information on Roman and Iron Age heritage sites in the area. Access has been improved with the creation of gateways, bridges and resting places, positioned for walkers to pause and admire the views.

The walk will take you on a journey through meadow fields in the lowland part of the farm where the River Dulas quietly meanders from its nearby source. The walk is of a fairly easy nature with a few small undulating climbs. There are resting benches positioned en route. The walking is on grassy fields with no hard footpath, therefore it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Stout foot-wear and appropriate clothing is recommended.

The Upland Hill Walk

Distance: 6 km (3¾ miles). Time: Allow 2-3 hours to enjoy. Please follow the waymarkers. Thanks to Ruth Rees Photography and Pam Knight for photographs.

A circular walk starting from the Lôn Lodges entrance. The walk will take you on a journey up through the hillside fields, eventually leading to the top of the Lôn Farm hill. The view from the top stretches for miles from the Cambrian Mountains to the Brecon Beacons. The walk will then lead down a country lane that will take you home to your Lodge. The walk is of a steep uphill nature. There are resting benches positioned en route. The hillside walk is on grassy fields with no hard footpath, therefore it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The hilltop view point can be accessed by driving up the lane to the top of the hill. Stout foot-wear and appropriate clothing is recommended.
